St. Patrick’s Day Festivities Planned at Historic Perry House

STRATFORD  – There’s no better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than to enjoy a pint with the taste of mouth-watering, fresh corned beef while listening to the strains of live Irish music – and there’s no better place to do it than the historic Perry House in Stratford, which will be converted to an Irish pub in honor of the celebration, event organizers said.

The Perry House Foundation will again hold Irish Night at the Perry House from 5 to 8 p.m. March 17 at the house 1128 West Broad St.
The house is at the I-95 Exit 32 rotary, next to the Baldwin Center.
The event will feature the sweet sounds of the live band, "Out on a Whim", which will perform traditional Irish tunes on fiddle, guitar and penny whistle (flute), the statement said.
There will be an open bar offering tapped Irish beer, an Irish specialty drink, wine and soft drinks, the statement said.
"To top it off, Executive Chef caterers will staff a carving station serving fresh-carved corned beef sandwiches on rye throughout the night, to compliment an array of Irish soda bread, assorted snacks and cookies, coffee and tea," the statement said.
Prizes will also be raffled as part of this fund-raising event. The Foundation sponsored a similar event in 2009 and is holding it again by popular demand, the statement said.
The event is sponsored by Stratford Executive Park.
Tickets for the event are $30 (all-inclusive), tax deductible as allowed by law.
Reservations should be made by phone at (203) 377-3779; through the Foundation’s website, at http://www.perryhousestratford.org/ or directly by e-mail at perryhouse1128@sbcglobal.net.
Due to limited space, it’s suggested that reservations be made early to avoid disappointment, the statement said.
There is ample, convenient parking available onsite.
Proceeds from the event will support the operation of the Perry House Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2004 to help preserve and manage the historic Perry House (c. 1690) as a visitor’s center and a facility for programs and private rentals, the statement.

The story of the 'Lost Children of Nepal' will be told

FAIRFIELD - The Fairfield Public Library will act as host to Conor Grennan, author of  "Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal" at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at 1080 Old Post Road.
Grennan, 29 will discuss and sign his newly released book, organizers said in a release.
"In search of adventure...Grennan traded his day job for a year-long trip around the globe. His journey began with a three month stint volunteering at the Little Princes Children’s Home, an orphanage in war torn Nepal," the release said.
"Grennan was stunned when he learned that these children were not orphans. For a huge fee, child traffickers were promising families in remote villages to protect their children from the civil war by taking them to safety. They would then abandon the children far from home, in the chaos of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. Little Princes is a true story of families and children and what one person is capable of when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. At turns the book is tragic, joyful and hilarious, but Little Princes is a testament to the power of faith and the ability of love to carry us beyond our wildest expectations."

Grennan, shown, spent eight years at the EastWest Institute both in Prague and the EU Office in Brussels where he served as deputy director for the Security and Governance Program, the release said. He founded Next Generation Nepal, an organization dedicated to reconnecting trafficked children with their families and combating the root causes of child trafficking in rural villages in Nepal, the release said.
He now serves on the board of Next Generation Nepal. He is a 2010 graduate of the NYU Stern School of Business.
"One person can make a difference."
Register online at http://www.fairfieldpubliclibrary.org/ or call 203-256-3160,
Books will be available for purchase after the program.
All events at the Fairfield Public Library are free of charge.

The Fairfield Public Library Writer’s Workshop will focus on "Building a Writer’s Platform" at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at 1080 Old Post Road.

The workshop will be presented by Adair Heitmann, shown.

"While waiting for agents to beat down your door, learn how to promote yourself and your writing by understanding what a platform is, why it’s important to have one, and how to find your niche," organizers said in a statement.
"Hear tried and true examples from an author who in September 2008 did not have a platform, and by 2009 when you Googled her, her name was at the top of the list."
“I had fun building my platform and it serves me well. I hope all the writers out there will come to the Fairfield Public Library and discover how they can build their writer’s platform,” Heitmann said, also in the statement.

Heitmann’s award-winning work has been published in three anthologies, more than 30 magazines and newspapers and online in Voices: A Journal of Women’s Wisdom, the statement said. Milford Chamber Honors Local Attorney David Slossberg

David Slossberg received 2010 awards for distinguished service

Attorney David Slossberg has been named Director of the Year and Chairman Emeritus by the Milford Chamber of Commerce.

Slossberg, a partner at the Milford-based law firm Hurwitz, Sagarin, Slossberg & Knuff, served the Chamber of Commerce as its chairman in 2010. He recently received the two Awards of Distinction during a gala last week.

“Each year, we honor the immediate past president as a way of highlighting his or her outstanding contributions to the Milford Chamber. David joins an elite and much-appreciated group of hard working individuals who have volunteered to lead the Chamber’s efforts to better the Milford business community,” said Kathleen Alagno, President and CEO of the Milford Chamber of Commerce. “We were privileged to have David lead us so adroitly, and are delighted to honor him with two awards for service.”

Spearheaded by Slossberg, the Milford Chamber last year ran a highly successful recruitment drive, attracting 128 new members during a four-week campaign. “David’s leadership abilities are extraordinary, and have led the Chamber through tough economic times,” Alagno said.

“Despite last year’s sluggish economy, dozens of new businesses and individuals became members of our chamber,” Slossberg said. “This suggests that the community has a clear understanding of its important support and effectiveness. It hosts regular networking events, has active leads groups, and acts to promote business-friendly legislation. Working with the Chamber team over the past year was a pleasure.”

A graduate of Columbia University, Slossberg earned his law degree in 1988 from New York University School of Law. He currently practices in the area of complex business litigation, class actions and employment law, addressing unfair trade practices, commercial contract disputes, land use, real estate, and reinsurance matters in the state and federal courts. He represents clients seeking to recover losses arising from fraud and embezzlement, and represents both lenders and borrowers in bank loan litigation and victims of all manner of discrimination.

Slossberg is chairman of the Connecticut Committee of the Federal Bar Council, treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Federal Bar Foundation, and serves on the boards of the Devon Rotary Foundation and Milford Progress Inc. Slossberg served on the Connecticut Class Action Rules Committee, and co-authored "Class Actions in Connecticut are Alive and Well," published in a 2007 statewide law journal. Slossberg has served as a special master in the Connecticut Federal Court and as past president of the Devon Rotary Club.

“David demonstrated unique people skills during the membership campaign and throughout the year,” Alagno said. “He made a cohesive organization from very diverse groups, often business competitors. It is largely because of him that our entire membership now works so well together, to the benefit of both the Chamber and the entire community.”

Since 1967, Hurwitz, Sagarin, Slossberg and Knuff, LLC, based in Milford, Conn., has assisted clients in resolving complex legal issues related to commercial, civil rights and class action litigation in both state and federal court forums, and land use and zoning matters. The firm also provides legal counsel on matters concerning unfair trade practices, fraud, white-collar crime, construction issues, and employment law.
