Archbishop to Bless Mabel Saloomey Center at Christ the Redeemer Church Sunday in Milford

MILFORD--Archbishop Mansell will bless the new Mabel Saloomey Center, a four-room addition to Christ the Redeemer Church in Milford, on Sunday, July 24 after the 10:30 a.m. Mass.

The long-awaited addition was made possible by its namesake, Mabel Saloomey, a founding member of the parish, who left $450,000 in her will. The addition will facilitate religious education classes for students. The Archdiocesan Catholic Biblical School will also hold classes at the center.

“She (Saloomey) was very clear that she wanted the money to go to an educational facility,” said Fr. Gerard G. Masters, temporary administrator of Christ the Redeemer. “We are so happy to be able to respect her wishes in such a grand way.”

According to Masters, Saloomey, as well as being a philathopist, was a lover of art. Some of her still life paintings of flowers adorn the rectory and sacristy.

Prior to the center being built, religious education classes were held in the Church Hall where the lack of space was certainly an issue.

In addition to Saloomey’s bequest, additional funding needed to complete construction was raised through a capital campaign.

“The parishioners have responded with incredible generosity,” said Masters. The capital campaign will continue through 2012.

Masters, who said the addition has taken three years to complete, has one regret and that is that Fr. Cyriac Maliekal, pastor of Church the Redeemer, won’t be present on Sunday for the blessing, because he is on a medical leave.

Henry V at Stratford Library July 23

SHAKESPEARE TROUPE RETURNS TO STRATFORD LIBRARY
Hudson Shakespeare Company Performs "Henry V" on July 23
While area residents continue to wait patiently for the reopening of the American Shakespeare Theatre, the Stratford Library is offering the best of the Bard all summer long.
The popular Hudson Shakespeare Company of New Jersey will perform the second of its scheduled three productions this year at the library. The month's offering is Shakespeare's historic drama, "Henry V" on Saturday, July 23 at 2 pm.  The performance, co-sponsored by the Square One Theatre Company, is free and open to the public.
Written in 1559, "Henry V" has been reinterpreted and deconstructed in each generation to suit the feel of its time. Hudson Shakespeare takes the approach to concentrate on the man at the center of it all - Henry V, and the personal struggle of living up to satisfy the needs of his country, his father's legacy, his peers, his soldiers and, most of all, to himself.  The play opens shortly after the death of the former king who, himself, had taken the crown in a fierce rebellion. Henry is now faced with the question of waging war on France to claim lands that belong to his family. In a tense opening gambit, the inexperienced king fends off influential clergy, nobles who want him dead, family who think he's not up to task and the French who think he's an ineffectual boy.
"Henry V" will be performed outdoors in the Stratford Library Amphitheatre on Saturday, July 23 at 2 pm.  Patrons should bring a lawn chair or blanket to spread prior to the 2 pm show time.  In the event of rain or extreme heat, performances will take place in the library's air-conditioned Lovell Room.
For further information, call the Stratford Library Public Relations and Programming Office at 203.385.4162 or visit: http://www.stratfordlibrary.org/.

United Way of Milford and ShopRite Team Up

For the fifth consecutive year, the United Way of Milford is pleased to announce United Way Month at ShopRite, a collaborative effort with the local grocery store to raise awareness of and support for the work the United Way does within the Milford community. Gary Johnson, president of the United Way of Milford, would like to especially thank Stonemar Properties, owner of the Milford Plaza Center, and Harry Garafalo, owner of ShopRite in Milford, for their continued support as the United Way looks to realize its one million dollar goal in 2011.

Beginning Saturday, July 2, and continuing through the end of the month, United Way volunteers will be outside ShopRite selling hot dogs and soda every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Donations can also be made at the register in $1 and $3 increments. Two baskets of Energizer products, generously donated by Schick, will be raffled off, as well as United Way shirts. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the United Way to further its mission of strengthening families, nurturing children, and meeting critical needs within the community.

The 2010 United Way Month at ShopRite was the most successful to date, raising $10,000 to benefit the 21 partner agencies and 30 programs that fall under the community-based organization’s umbrella. Volunteers from these groups will also be on hand to share their support of the United Way’s work in the community. Says Garafalo, “The United Way of Milford and their partner agencies continue to provide the city with essential services improving the quality of life for many residents. Our annual fundraiser heightens the community awareness of all the programs that encompass the United Way while providing resources to help them to achieve their goals.”
