United Way of Milford Officers Scholarship

The United Way of Milford is pleased to announce that it has established the “United Way of Milford Directors Scholarship”. United Way chairman Jonathan Berchem noted that the $500.00 scholarship is available to any graduating senior from Joseph Foran, Jonathan Law, Platt Technical or Lauralton Hall who is planning to enroll in an accredited two or four year college or technical school after graduation.

Attorney Berchem, chairman of the United Way board noted that the funds for the scholarships are not coming from any outside donations, but are being pledged by both present and former United Way board members. We are really excited about this program Berchem said and are thrilled that as a board we could help our youth in this small way.

Peter Spalthoff, United Way of Milford’s finance chairman pointed out that the qualifications for the scholarship are principally based on “community service”. Just as the United Way is involved in the Milford community, the applicant must have demonstrated their involvement as well. Each applicant will have to document that during each of their four years of high school they have been involved in the Milford community serving or helping their neighbors. Additionally, the applicants must be Milford residents. Spalthoff noted that each of the four principals he spoke to were as excited about receiving the scholarships almost as much as the Board was in awarding them and that this will be an annual award with the goal that the dollar value of the scholarship will increase over the years.

This is just another way for the United Way to reach out to help those that are not just in need, but are deserving of a little additional help and have helped others along the way, Spalthoff said.

Applications are available from the various schools scholarship administrators and those interested in applying should contact their schools for information and an application.
