September is National Literacy Month

The Literacy Center of Milford is holding a student and tutor recognition night, Beginnings 2011: Student Essays and a Celebration of Accomplishments on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 P.M. at City Hall, River Street. ESL students will have an opportunity to read their stories, some for the first time reading English in public.

We will also be celebrating several student accomplishments, Yun Kim received her Masters of Nursing and Honors Society of Nursing at UCONN, Theresia Puzzo became a US Citizen, Nora Plander received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Transatlantic
Curriculum in Nursing and Certificate at Nazareth College, NY, and Yong Zhu got a new job as a software developer and will be creating phone applications and creating casino slot machines programs. Xueyan Peng had an Essay published in Easy English News, June 2011 and Jose Bonilla’s essay was published in Easy English News, March 2011.

Milford teachers Joann Lombardi and Shannon Worcester have been selected to receive the Callahan/Holzwarth Award. This award goes to a new teacher who can benefit from new books in his/her classroom. We will also be honoring Melinda Karwon with our volunteer award. Melinda has been tutoring for 7 years, teaching an advanced class on Friday mornings. Melinda has so enjoyed tutoring that she has returned to school to get a degree in ESL teaching. Melinda has also joined the Board of Directors this year.

Refreshments will be served.

“Given that September is National Literacy Awareness Month,” said Executive Director, Tami Jackson, “it seemed appropriate to hold this event and honor the accomplishments our students have achieved. We are also celebrating a reading event, Turn the Page Day in some Milford schools on September 30 and we are holding our Summer Raffle. Prizes include a week in Florida, 42” Flat screen TV and $285 in gift certificates to dine in town. September is a busy time for us and we are excited to bring attention to literacy awareness, but every month is literacy month as far as we are concerned.”
