“Texture” is Stratford Library Art Exhibit for September

STRATFORD - Debbie Gilbert Taylor is September Artist of Month with “Texture: Inspired by Nature and Man” at the Stratford Library.
“I have always been drawn to texture in any dimensional form,” Gilbert Taylor of Stratford said, “whether it is the feel of a soft fabric or cool stone, juxtaposition of colors, the play of light and shadow on an object or the (incongruity) of old architecture against the backdrop of a shiny, glass building.
"Even though a photograph is in only two dimensions, the play of light, composition, value and perspective are interpreted by our brains as three-dimensional," she said in a statement. "I am currently experimenting with many mediums, such as collage, sculpture, painting, altered books and others, but continue to use the camera to capture what appears around me.”
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Gilbert’s last exhibit at the Stratford Library was a photojournalistic story of her trip to China in 2005, the statement said.
She has shown her work in many juried shows and won several prizes. The Stratford Arts commission purchased an ink drawing for the town’s collection in 1995, the statement said.
Gilbert also has been commissioned for photos in Positive People Magazine and for the cover of “The Best 10 Minute Plays for 3 or more Actors, 2008 edition,” the statement said.
She founded the Stratford Arts Guild in 2006 and currently serves as the Membership Chair of the Women’s Caucus for Art.
Gilbert is a member of the Connecticut Sculpture Society and the Valley Arts Council.
“Texture: Inspired by Nature and Man” is on exhibit in the Main Lobby of the Stratford Library through Sept. 30.

Photo collection on display at Stratford Library

Stratford Community Fund sponsors exhibit

STRATFORD - A collection of photographs taken by local residents is on display through May at the Stratford Public Library.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Stratford Community Fund, features works of prize winners and other selected entries from the SCF’s annual amateur photography contests, contest Chairman Paul Reslink said in a statement.
The contests have focused on Stratford and its many attractions for the last three years.
The 2009 competition was opened to children and drew 62 entries. Information about this year’s contest will be announced. Winners from previous years are shown in photos.
The SCF, which originated in 1990, is a non-profit charitable organization that honors and recognizes people in the community for their volunteer services, fosters intellectual and creative development and supports efforts to improve the town’s physical appearance, the statement said.

The SCF recently honored four individuals and one non-profit agency for their dedicated volunteer service to the community at the third annual Lighthouse Awards ceremony at the Library, the statement said.

Information about the group can be obtained by contacting SCF President Bill O’Brien at 203-378-2606, ext. 106, or at bobrien@sterlinghousecc.org.
