The telephone as art

“It’s for you” Conceptual Art and the Telephone at HCC

The Housatonic Museum of Art at Housatonic Community College will present an exhibit “'It’s for you' Conceptual Art and the Telephone" in the Burt Chernow Galleries and other areas of the HCC campus from Feb. 24 to March 25, according to a statement
"The exhibit is, in part, a response to the wide-ranging use of phones in the hallways and other areas on the campus of the college," the statement said.

"Each day students text, talk, surf the net, and listen to music on their phones. With this exhibition, artworks that use the phone as an artistic medium or mediator are brought together in an original exhibition curated by Terri C. Smith," the statement said.

"The projects range from the late 1960s to today and include sound pieces, videos, and objects that resonate with the functions, technologies, and physicality of the telephone. Artists in the exhibition include: T. Foley, Lukas Geronimas, Jeremy LeClair, Christian Marclay, Yoko Ono, Rachel Perry Welty, Robert Peters, Pietro Pellini, and Hannah Wilk."

"Many of the artists in “It’s for you” aim to democratize the artist/audience relationship, a quality that is intricately woven into the history of conceptual art. In “It’s for you,” Yoko Ono might call the gallery as part of her Telephone Piece, providing direct contact between artist and viewer. Students will work with T. Foley, creating their own ring tones as part of her Locally Toned project. Archival materials are also included as a way to represent ephemeral works from the past as with Robert Peters’ Naming Others: Manufacturing Yourself (1993) where the artist asked people to call an 800 number from pay phones and choose which stereotyping phrase described them best," the statement said.

HCC is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport, less than 150 yards off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte. 8 (Exit 1), a block from the Arena at Harbor Yard. Free parking is available in the Housatonic garage.

Housatonic Community College to offer fall healthcare programs

BRIDGEPORTHousatonic Community College will offer non-credit certified nurse assistant and patient care technician programs this fall.
The CNA program, which consists of classroom instruction, laboratory work and hands-on training (36 hours of each), will prepare students to take the state CNA certification exam.
The course will cover providing all aspects of personal care to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse.
The 108-hour PCT Program, which adds another layer of skills to those learned in a CNA program, prepares students to perform patient care activities that include such things as lab tests, electrocardiograms, simple dressing changes, phlebotomy, and physical and occupational therapy safety.
The program involves a combination of lecture, hands-on practical laboratory exercises, and real-world clinical experience at an off-campus medical facility.
“Offering these programs reflects HCC’s commitment to preparing students for careers that are in demand,” said Deborah S. Kuchmas, director of workforce and non-credit programs. “Nursing careers are projected to grow 17 percent over the next eight years.”
The two programs will provide a career ladder pathway that will enable unemployed individuals and underemployed health care workers to develop the skills necessary to seek higher-level positions in healthcare facilities, Kuchmas said.
The creation of the PCT program comes just in time to meet a growing demand for these medical professionals, Kuchmas said.
A new CNA/PCT Lab has been built at HCC to accommodate the new programs, Kuchmas said.
The lab will enable students to practice the skills learned in class. The PCT students must be currently state registered as a CNA.
The PCT program starts Sept. 13 while the CNA program starts Sept. 14. Tuition for the CNA program is $674, and, for the PCT Program, $1,299.
For more information, or to apply to the program, contact Continuing Education at 203-332-5057.

Flower Power

Exhibit asks artists to 'breathe new life' into still lifes

BRIDGEPORT ‑ Flower (Re)Power, an annual open-juried competition with guest Curator Terri C. Smith will be held at the Housatonic Museum of Art June 17 through July 23.

The competition, "designed to breathe new life into the flower as an artistic symbol or subject, provides an opportunity for emerging and under-recognized artists to have their work seen by a notable curator working in the field and to exhibit their work in a significant venue," organizers said in a statement.

“Still life paintings of flowers are often predictable and decorative,” Museum Director Robbin Zella said in the statement. “Flower (Re)Power is asking artists to breathe new life into the genre.”

"Contemporary artists such as Charles Ray, Andy Warhol, Peter Coffin, Polly Apfelbaum, and Christopher Wool have managed to break free of familiar formulas and create new aesthetics and approaches to the flower.”

With about 15 years of curatorial experience, freelance Curator Terri C. Smith has created more than 70 exhibitions and a variety of related programming for museums and other not-for-profit arts institutions, the statement said.

The "shows usually involved working with contemporary artists, but also included permanent collection exhibitions and art historical projects," the statement said.

The exhibit, free and open to the public, will be on display in the Burt Chernow Galleries in Lafayette Hall at Housatonic Community College.

The opening reception will be held 5 to 7 p.m. June 17 in the galleries. For more information visit http://www.housatonicmuseum.org/.

Housatonic Community College is located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in downtown Bridgeport.

Free parking is available in the HCC garage.

The galleries are open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Thursdays until 7 p.m. The museum is closed all state and national holidays.
